The question we get most often from new users is always the same: "But how can I trust people?". It's the right question. Lendmates is a peer-to-peer rental platform, and trust isn't something you take for granted โ€” it's built with concrete mechanisms.

This guide explains exactly how Lendmates's security system works: from the deposit to the QR code, from deposit management to disputes. No unnecessary jargon.

1. Verified identity: you always know who you're dealing with

Before a user can rent or list on Lendmates, they must pass an identity verification process. It's not a casual selfie: we use document recognition technology to validate that the person matches the document provided.

This means every lender knows the borrower is a real person with a verified identity, and vice versa. There's no anonymity. Responsibility is personal and documented.

2. The security deposit: who manages it and how

When a borrower books an item, in addition to the rental cost, a security deposit is required. This amount does not go to the lender: it remains held by the platform for the entire rental period.

๐Ÿ’ก The deposit is managed entirely by Lendmates through the Stripe network. It's never in the lender's hands, and it's never automatically released to the lender.

What happens to the deposit

The deposit is automatically released to the borrower only if the rental ends without issues. Specifically, the conditions are:

  1. The return has been confirmed via QR code scan
  2. Both parties confirm that "everything went well"
  3. No dispute is opened within 24 hours of the return

If even one of these conditions is not met, the deposit remains held until the situation is resolved by the Lendmates team.

3. The QR code: physical proof of handover

Every physical exchange on Lendmates is certified by a unique QR code. The mechanism is simple:

1

The lender generates the QR at the start of the rental

When the lender and borrower meet for the handover, the lender shows their QR code from the app.

2

The borrower scans and the rental begins

The scan certifies that the borrower has physically received the item. The rental moves to "active" status and the payment to the lender is unlocked.

3

At return: reverse QR

At the end of the rental, the borrower generates a return QR. The lender scans it to certify that the item has been returned.

4

Status confirmation: all good or problem?

After the return, both parties receive a card to declare the item's condition. The response determines the fate of the deposit.

The QR code is not just a tech convenience: it's legal proof of the exact moment the item changed hands. Without a scan, there's no handover recognized by the platform.

4. What happens if something goes wrong

Lendmates has scenarios for every problematic situation. Here are the most common:

โœ… Smooth rental

Both confirm "all good" โ†’ deposit released to the borrower within 24h.

โŒ Damaged item

The lender opens a dispute with photos as evidence โ†’ deposit held, Lendmates team decides.

โœ… No one responds within 24h

If a party doesn't respond to the confirmation card, "all good" is assumed for both.

โŒ A party doesn't show up

Whoever doesn't show up loses protection. The lender's no-show automatically releases the deposit to the borrower.

5. The dispute system (claim)

If there's a problem at return โ€” damage, unreturned item, condition different from what was declared โ€” anyone can open a dispute from the app within 24 hours of the return. The Lendmates team reviews the situation and decides the fate of the deposit based on the evidence provided.

The possible decisions are three:

๐Ÿ’ก For those renting high-value items, we always recommend documenting the item's condition with photos before handover and sharing them in the chat with the borrower. This documentation is essential in case of a dispute.

6. Reviews: reputation matters

After every completed rental, both parties leave a review. Reviews are public, cannot be deleted, and are verified by the platform. A lender with many positive reviews sees their listings at the top of results. A borrower with negative reviews will find it harder to book valuable items.

Lendmates's security is not based on blind trust: it's based on concrete mechanisms that protect both parties. The platform-managed deposit, the QR code as physical proof, the transparent dispute system โ€” every element is designed to reduce risk and make peer-to-peer rental as reliable as a traditional shop.
